The Long Beach International City Bank Marathon & Half Marathon Events
Events to be held October 15th to 17th

LONG BEACH, CA – Around 25,000 are expected to participate in the Long Beach International City Bank Marathon & Half Marathon events from Friday, October 15 to Sunday, October 17, 2010. Sunday’s events include the Marathon, Half Marathon, Marathon Bike Tour and Bubba Gump Run Forrest Run 5K. The Kids One-Mile Fun Run will take place on Saturday, October 16 and will be FREE to enter for children ages 6 to 12 years old.

Among the updates for 2010 include a new location for the Start, Finish and Finish Line Festival. The changes were made to accommodate the growth of the race. The majority of the course will remain the same, but the Start and Finish have each been moved 1000 feet to the West. The Start will be located on Shoreline Drive, just East of Pine Ave. The Finish is also located on Shoreline Drive, just East of Shoreline Village Drive. The Finish Line Festival will now be located on a larger footprint on the Marina Green from Linden Ave. to Shoreline Village Drive.

Another change for 2010 is the Kids Run is being moved from Sunday to Saturday. As part of a major emphasis on improving youth health and fitness as well as helping to counter the major childhood obesity epidemic, the Marathon has joined forces with the non-profit Aquarium of the Pacific host a free Aquarium of the Pacific One-Mile Kids Fun Run on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 9 am to noon.

Up to 2000 kids ages 6 to 12 can run in the event at no cost and will be encouraged to dress in blue or as their favorite marine creature. The Grand Marshall for the race will be none other than Lola, the Aquarium’s resident talking cockatoo. Costumed characters like the sea otter and shark will be cheering for the runners. Those participating will each receive a commemorative Sea Star Medal a finisher certificate, and free entry to the Aquarium. Kids will be timed and will run in waves with their own age group.

Bubba Gump will again host their Run Forrest Run 5K in association with the marathon. In the spirit of “Forrest Gump” the movie — on which the restaurant theme is based — the event will start at 8:30 on Sunday, October 17 at the Marathon Start Line passing right by the Long Beach Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. “Forrest Gump” himself will be on hand as runners and walkers enjoy a beautiful course around the Pike, Aquarium of the Pacific and Shoreline Village. Afterwards, participants and spectators will be treated to Bubba Gump food, activities, entertainment and prizes.

Participants can attend one of two Official Carbo-Load Dinners being held on Saturday evening, October 16. Buono’s Pizzeria is again hosing their great “All You Can Eat” Mamma Mia Carbo-Load Feast from 5 pm to 7:30 pm at their location on 250 West Ocean Blvd in Long Beach. The menu includes traditional and gourmet pizzas, 3 different pastas, salad, and soft drinks and the cost is $16.99. The Queen Mary is also hosting an Official Carbo-Load Dinner in the Grand Ballroom from 5 pm to 7 pm. The all you can eat dinner menu will include pasta favorites such as cheese tortellini, meat ravioli and penne puttanesca. Adult tickets are $25 and Kids tickets $12 (12 and under). For more information on both Carbo-Load Dinner events visit WWW.RUNLONGBEACH.COM.

More than 50,000 people will attend the two-day Health & Fitness Expo – FREE to the public — at the Long Beach Convention Center, Hall C, open Friday, October 15, from noon-7 pm and Saturday, October 16, from 9 am- 6 pm. The Expo will feature more than 100 exhibitors, highlighting the latest in the running, health and fitness industry. All athletes must attend the expo to pick up their race packets, and the expo is also the last place to register for any of the marathon events. There is no race-day registration or packet pickup.

Since 2005, the Long Beach International City Bank Marathon has helped charities raise over $3 million dollars for their good causes. This year, 30 Official Charities are conducting pledge drives and will benefit as a result of their relationship with the marathon. Combined these charities hope to raise around one million dollars for their organizations.

Local Long Beach charities involved in pledge drives include: We Love Long Beach Arts, Children Today, Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach Day Nursery; Partners of Parks, Special Olympics of Southern California, New Hope Grief Support, Long Beach BLAST, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center / Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach, Long Beach Rescue Mission, Operation Jump Start, Boys and Girls Club of Long Beach, and Substance Abuse Foundation Long Beach.

As part of a greater partnership with Long Beach Arts Council, local artists are getting involved in the event. The Marathon Mile Markers will feature artwork created by kids at Miller Children’s Hospital. The long-term goal of this partnership is to make the marathon a 26.2 Mile Art Exhibit. World Champion Sand Sculptors Archisand will return to build a large 13 foot high replica of the race medal at the Finish Line Festival. Participants will use the sand sculpture as a backdrop for post-event photos.
